2023 Kansas High School Football Rankings-Week 5

The 2023 high school football regular season has hit the halfway point.  There is a bit of shifting in the higher classes after some upsets this week.  Here are my rankings heading into Week 5.

Notes: #1 Gardner-Edgerton was impressive in a 49-10 win at 5A #1 Mill Valley.  Washburn Rural moves up from #5 to #2 after a 35-28 win over then #2 Manhattan, snapping the Indians’ 16-game winning streak.  Manhattan drops to #3 with the loss.  Olathe North moves in at #4 after a 54-31 win over Shawnee Mission South.  Free State is now #5 with a 41-12 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest.  Wichita Northwest drops out of the poll from #3 after a 34-28 loss to Wichita East.  Lawrence drops from #4 with a 24-6 loss at Olathe East.

Big game in Week 5: #1 Gardner-Edgerton hosts #4 Olathe North on Friday night.

Notes: Despite a 49-10 loss to 6A #1 Gardner-Edgerton, I’m keeping Mill Valley at #1 this week.  #2 Kapaun-Mt. Carmel won 48-21 over Battle High School out of Columbia, MO.  #3 Blue Valley Southwest beat previously unbeaten Spring Hill 63-35.  #4 Goddard-Eisenhower was impressive in a 41-17 win over 4A #3 Andover Central.  Valley Center moves in at #5 with a 42-14 win at Campus.  Hutchinson falls from #5 after a 27-17 loss to Derby.

Big game in Week 5: #5 Valley Center is at Salina Central (3-1) on Friday night.

4A
1. Bishop Miege (3-1)
2. St. Thomas Aquinas (4-0)

Notes: Bishop Miege stays at #1 even after a hard-fought 21-14 loss to Missouri power Rockhurst.  #2 St. Thomas Aquinas won 21-6 over St. James.  Louisburg moves up to #3 with a 45-8 win at Bonner Springs.  Andover Central drops one spot to #4 after their 41-17 loss to 5A #4 Goddard-Eisenhower.  Tonganoxie is into the poll at #5 with a 49-21 win at Paola.  Eudora falls out of the poll after a 17-14 home loss to Ottawa.

Big game in Week 5: #2 St. Thomas Aquinas gets their shot at Rockhurst (MO) as they host the Hawklets on Friday night.

Notes: No changes in 3A this week.  #1 Andale ran their win streak to 55 games, blasting Smoky Valley 74-0.  #2 Cheney picked up a 49-0 shutout at Pratt.  #3 Wichita Collegiate cruised to a 55-8 win at Clearwater.  #4 Clay Center won 75-13 over Hiawatha.  #5 Topeka-Hayden coasted to a 64-0 shutout at Jefferson West.

Big game in Week 5: In a non-district game, #4 Clay Center hosts 2A #5 Southeast of Saline on Friday night.

2A
1. Nemaha Central (4-0)
2. Sabetha (4-0)
3. Ellsworth (4-0)
4. Hoisington (4-0)
5. Southeast of Saline (4-0)

Notes: No changes again in 2A this week.  #1 Nemaha Central picked up another shutout, blasting Horton 69-0.  #2 Sabetha won 28-6 at Minneapolis.  #3 Ellsworth won 43-15 at Hillsboro.  #4 Hoisington blasted Southwestern Heights 63-6.  #5 Southeast of Saline picked up a 24-0 shutout at home over Halstead.

Big game in Week 5: The same as 3A as #5 Southeast of Saline is at 3A #4 Clay Center on Friday night.

1A
1. Pittsburg-Colgan (4-0)
2. Marion (4-0)
3. Smith Center (3-1)
4. Centralia (4-0)
5. Jefferson County North (4-0)

Notes: 1A stays the same this week as well.  #1 Pittsburg-Colgan posted a 53-0 shutout at Southeast-Cherokee.  #2 Marion won 36-13 at Remington.  #3 Smith Center held on for a 16-14 home win over Wabaunsee.  #4 Centralia handled Troy 36-6.  #5 Jefferson County North handed McLouth their first loss with a 52-6 win in Winchester.

Big game in Week 5: #4 Centralia hosts Jackson Heights (4-0) on Friday night.

8-Man DI

Notes: #1 Wichita County picked up a 52-0 road shutout against St. John.  #2 Lyndon won 58-30 at Cair Paravel.  #3 Meade won 68-18 over previously unbeaten Sublette on Saturday.  #4 Moundridge picked up a 48-0 home shutout over Pretty Prairie.  Rawlins County moves in at #5 after an impressive 54-6 win over Hill City.  Burlingame drops from #5 after a 46-0 shutout loss at home to Chase County.

Big game in Week 5: #2 Lyndon hosts Madison (4-0) on Friday night.

8-Man DII

Notes: No changes in 8-Man-DII this week.  #1 Axtell picked up their 30th straight win, beating Linn 56-6.  #2 Minneola won 60-32 at Bucklin.  #3 Canton-Galva beat Norwich 68-14.  #4 Kinsley handed South Barber their first loss, winning 56-30.  #5 Victoria also beat previously unbeaten Central Plains with a 48-0 shutout in Claflin.

Big game in Week 5: #4 Kinsley is at Central Christian (3-1) in Hutchinson on Friday night.

6-Man

Notes: No changes this week in 6-Man.  #1 Cheylin won 54-6 over #5 Northern Valley.  #2 Ashland beat previously unbeaten Deerfield 58-6.  #3 Cunningham picked up a 50-0 shutout over Tescott.  #4 Waverly rolled to a 45-0 shutout at Centre.

Big game in Week 5: #4 Waverly hosts Chetopa (4-0) on Friday night.
